Singer-songwriter, Tom Walker, was recently in Birmingham as his sold-out UK tour reached it’s middle of the road. I was lucky enough to have a nice chat with Tom about his current UK tour and latest single, ‘Play Dead’. We also discussed his confirmed place at the ‘Live at Leeds’ festival.

“‘Play Dead’ is really about me and my partner being the only two people left on Earth. The song explores what would happen if the world ended and we were the only two people left. I’m not 100% sure where the inspiration for the song came from,” Tom says. His latest single is available to listen to on Soundcloud. Walker was born in Glasgow, but grew up in Manchester. He states his biggest inspiration whilst growing up was actually his Dad. “He took me to see Slipknot, more so because he wanted to see them. He was always strict when it came to gaming, but, if ever I wanted something music related he’d be happy to invest in it and support me.”

Walker’s main musical inspirations include Sting and The Police, AC/DC, and Paolo Nutini, which is evident throughout his own style of music. I, personally, feel as though Walker’s style and vocals are similar to that of Jason Mraz’s.

Tom is also set to play ‘Live at Leeds’ festival later on this year. He mentioned how last year whilst playing there, he had the chance to perform in a Church and managed to stay throughout the duration of the festival. “However, this time round we have a better time slot, so I’ll probably have even more of a great time performing.”

Upcoming projects that Walker has lined up, include work on an EP with Jim Abbiss, whose previously produced for the likes of Adele and the Artic Monkeys. “We’ve got plenty more tunes to release and I feel Jim can really bring the best out of the songs.”
